A Sensory Space So Good We Didn't Want to Leave

Road Trip Stop: Washington, PA

By Devon Sayre September 18, 2026

If your family is ever passing through Washington, PA, put Explore Your Senses on your list. This little sensory play space ended up being one of our favorite stops of the entire trip, and honestly, one of the most relaxing.

We timed our visit for quiet hours, and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made. My daughter had the entire space to herself. No waiting for a turn at the sensory bins, no crowd noise, no rushing her through an activity because another kid was hovering. Just slow, unhurried, open-ended play, exactly what sensory spaces are supposed to feel like. (Quiet Play hours run Monday through Thursday, 12 to 1 PM, with a library-voice-level request so it stays calm for sensory-sensitive kiddos.)

We also got to sit down and chat with the owner, Cassie for a while, which is always one of our favorite parts of stops like this. You can tell right away how much heart goes into the space. It's not just equipment thrown into a room, it's clearly built by someone who understands what kids actually need to regulate, explore, and play. They rotate themed sensory bins regularly, so if you visit more than once, you're getting a completely different experience each time. They also run interactive story time daily at 11 AM, so if your visit lines up, that's worth planning around.

Our favorite detail, hands down? Their sand is ceramic coated. If you have a sensory kid (or honestly, any kid), you know exactly what that sand aftermath usually looks like. It ends up in shoes, hair, car seats, and somehow still on your kitchen floor three days later. This sand gives your child all that same squishy, moldable, satisfying sensory feedback, without any of it coming home with you. It genuinely feels like a small miracle if you've ever tried to vacuum regular play sand out of a minivan.

Explore Your Senses sits right inside the Tanger Outlets in Washington, PA (2200 Tanger Blvd, Suite 140), which made for an easy, low-stress family day. We got some shopping in, grabbed a bite, and then wound down with some calm, sensory-rich play before hitting the road again. If you're road-tripping through the area like we were, it's a great way to break up a long drive and give your kids (and honestly, yourself) a reset.

They're open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 2 PM (hours can shift for heat waves or rain days, so it's worth a quick check before you go).
