Philadelphia, PA: The Liberty Bell and Our First Phillies Game

Stop 4 of Macaroni KID Hits the Road: our family's road trip home to Houston

By Devon Sayre September 30, 2026

Philly, you were SO much fun! πŸ”” We only had a few days in the City of Brotherly Love, but we packed in history, amazing food, and our very first Phillies game. The best part? Almost everything we wanted to see was within walking distance of where we stayed.

Where We Stayed: A Cozy Airbnb in Chinatown

We booked a really cool Airbnb in Chinatown, and we highly recommend it. Our host was amazing, and the location could not have been better. We were within walking distance of the historic sites, the food, and the fun, so we spent our days exploring on foot instead of hunting for parking.

Walking Through History

Philadelphia is where so much of American history happened, and it was pretty incredible to walk the same streets as the Founding Fathers.

πŸ›οΈ Declaration House. We walked to the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Standing where it all started was a pretty special moment.

🏠 The President's House. We got to see where the original "White House" stood, the home of the President and First Lady back when Philadelphia was the nation's capital.

πŸ”” The Liberty Bell. Did you know the Liberty Bell is a national landmark cared for by the National Park Service? It's part of Independence National Historical Park, which we thought was so cool! We got our picture with the bell, and it was one of the highlights of the trip.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Independence Square. We wrapped up our history tour strolling around Independence Square, right outside Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was actually signed. We soaked it all in.

Where We Ate: Reading Terminal Market

If you only eat one place in Philly, make it Reading Terminal Market. This huge food market sits right across from the convention center inside an old train station, and it has over 80 food vendors under one roof. It was just two blocks from our Airbnb, so we ended up going multiple times a day for breakfast, lunch, and coffee.

The coffee was good, the food was good, and there was something for everyone in the family. A few of our favorites:

πŸ₯ͺ A classic deli sandwich from one of the market's delis that was absolutely delicious.

πŸ§€ Samo Sori's bread bowls filled with egg and melty cheese fondue. Absolutely killer. Do not skip this one!

β˜• Coffee to keep us going between adventures.

🍜 Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House. We grabbed dinner at this spot in Chinatown near our Airbnb, and according to Blakely, it was "the best food" she's ever had. That's a pretty big review from our toughest food critic! πŸ˜‚ And don't leave without ordering the coconut chicken curry dumplings. They were to die for. πŸ₯Ÿ

Our First Phillies Game! ⚾

We went to our very first Phillies game, and it was SO much fun. The energy, the fans, the ballpark food, all of it. Before and after the game, we hung out at Stateside Live!, the entertainment spot right by the stadiums. It was a great place to grab a bite and keep the fun going after the last pitch. Tips for Families Visiting Philadelphia

  • Bring a stroller. If you're traveling with a little one, you'll be doing a lot of walking, and little legs get tired fast.
  • Don't let the Liberty Bell line scare you. It may look long, but it moves quickly.
  • Stop by the Independence Visitor Center. It's right across the street and has a little kids area, plus lots of fun souvenirs.
  • Stay somewhere walkable. Being close to the historic district and Reading Terminal Market made our trip so much easier.
  • Go to Reading Terminal Market hungry. With over 80 vendors, you'll want to try a little of everything.

Our Overall Review

We packed a LOT into a few short days, and we had the best time. Philly is a fantastic city for families, with history you can walk right up to, food that is worth the trip on its own, and a ballpark experience your kids won't forget. We would absolutely come back! πŸ’™
